Mulled wine, vin chaud, glühwein or to put it simple – hot wine. Whatever the name, this is one wine even your grandmother would want you to drink in the cold winter weather.

Mulled wine is a hot red wine drink, which according to some even has beneficial healing qualities! It’s no surprise since this hot drink has its origins in religious convents where wine was mixed with herbs and spices to create a natural pharmaceutical.

Mulled wine has reached its popularity thanks to taste and curative properties. The active ingredients that are known to be beneficial to health are the tannins that act as an antiviral element perfect for fighting a cold; cinnamon, cloves and lemon rind that are perfect for fighting the flu and bronchitis.

Hot Mulled Wine Recipe

Ingredients

6 cups of red wine
3 cinnamon sticks
10 cloves
1 lemon peel
½ lb of sugar

Preparation

In a large pot, mix wine, cloves, cinnamon and lemon rind on low heat. Slowly add the sugar ¼ cup at a time, stirring constantly. Keep stirring until the sugar is completely dissolved and continue cooking for 10 minutes on low heat.

Filter wine before pouring into cups and enjoy a healthy glass of hot wine!
