Wine&insects

There is a new trend which might bug you out a bit – it’s eating insects! If you want to try this nutritious movement, you might as well pair it with the right drink to wash it down! Here is our list of best insects and wine pairings. Go ahead and try it. It’s not as bad as it sounds.

Casu Marzu | Chianti Classico Red Wine

You may have heard of this cheese wheel filled with worms called Casu Marzu. It’s a typical delicacy from Sardinia. This sheep cheese filled with insect larvae is fermented so much that it begins to decompose. And Italians seem to love it! Pair this with a strong red wine such as a Chianti Classico. And yes, it’s ok to eat the worm-cheese on bread!

Ants | Gewürztraminer

Now don’t go picking up ants from your front yard and start munching them. Not all ants are edible. But they are becoming more and more popular in alternative dishes. Sauté them and enjoy in an Asian stir fry. Ants are actually a bit sour, so the best wine to pair with these common bugs is a Gewürztraminer.

Crickets | Pinot Grigio

Crickets are generally fried with a bit of salt and garlic, and the flavor is often a but nutty. A great wine to match with these little critters is a full-bodied Pinot Grigio.

Waterbugs | Sherry

This one is a little harder to stomach, but waterbugs are finally making their way to the dinner table! These insects are meaty and have somewhat of a seafood flavor to them so your best bet for a pairing is a dry sherry.

Now if you have made it this far, you seem to show an interest in the new trend of insect eating. Congratulations you are well on your way to enjoying the future of superfoods!
