Sicily is known for its savory and delicious cuisine, but perhaps one of the most delicious side dishes of all is broccoli affogati, known as broccoli fuati in Sicilian dialect. This mouth-watering dish may be a side dish, but it often takes center stage on the table. Here is the perfect recipe for Sicilian broccoli affoagati.

Serves 4 people
Ingredients for Broccoli Affogati
2 lbs. of broccoli
1 oz. anchovies in oil
4 oz. red wine
1 clove of sliced garlic
2 ounces of finely chopped onion
parsley finely chopped, as desired
Salt, as desired
Pepper, as desired
4 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
¾ cup freshly grated Pecorino cheese
Preparation for Broccoli Affogati
Separate the stems of your broccoli and clean thoroughly in cold water. In pan, add your garlic and 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil over medium heat until your garlic is slightly browned. Add your onion and sauté shortly. Add your broccoli heads. Add salt and pepper as desired and then add the rest of your oil.
Sprinkle with freshly grated Pecorino cheese and cook over medium heat for about 20 minutes without stirring. When broccoli is thoroughly cooked, add your red wine and mix gently. Cook for another 5 minutes. And it’s time to eat!
